Sanford Police Chief Billy Lee said there is no evidence to dispute self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman’s assertion that he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin out of self-defense.

ABC news

As an attorney, who is also a woman of color, who is also a daughter and sister and cousin to men of color, hearing this is some insane bs. To put it simply, you are permitted to protect yourself and others. You are not however allowed to unreasonably escalate the level of violence. So, if you’ve just hit me a few times, but there’s no basis for me believing that my life is in danger (you’re not 10x my size, you don’t have some instrumentality that could endanger my life, etc.) I can respond, but I cannot do something that will likely result in your death.

So this “no evidence to dispute that it wasn’t self defense” is already a misnomer. Self-defense only stays self-defense if your response is on equal footing to the initial aggression. Here, not only is there a question as to who was the aggressor (all signs point to Zimmerman) but the response of shooting someone a hundred pounds lighter than you that has no weapon, is insane. And based on the information that has been released, there is no indication that the child said that he had a weapon or that Zimmerman would have any reason to believe his life was in danger.

White privilege.

  • “If you can’t trust me with a choice, then how can you trust me with a child?”
  • “‘No self-respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her success.’ - Susan B. Anthony, 1872
  • “Would you kill your wife to spare your fetus?”
  • “I don’t own a womb, and I don’t want to own anyone else’s!”
  • “‘No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her own body.’ - Margaret Sanger”
  • “Every baby wanted/ Every mother willing/ Pro-choice”
  • “Legalized abortions were not the start of women having abortions. They were the end of women dying from unsafe and unregulated abortions. Don’t go backwards!”
  • “This is not a theocracy. Keep your myth out of our government.”
  • “Things that belong in a uterus: IUDs, babies, hormones. Things that do not belong in a uterus: religion, laws, men, ‘persons,’ misplaced moral outrage”
  • “In Oklahoma, 3,429 children are already awaiting adoption (most recent statistic: 2009)”

This is a really awesome photo set. I can’t pick a favorite.

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh unleashed a hateful tirade against 30-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, who became a birth control activist after her friend couldn’t afford the contraception that would treat her ovarian cysts.
Rush responded by calling her a “slut” and a “prostitute.” He even demanded that Fluke post sex tapes online so he could watch.
Limbaugh has crossed the line. He isn’t just attacking Sandra Fluke—he’s attacking all women. Use the form here to let Sandra Fluke know that you are on her side.

Wasn’t able to reblog this yesterday due to our blackout.

Have we really become so unsexy as a society that you don’t even get to touch somebody for it to count as an affair? Here are the things Anthony Weiner didn’t do. He didn’t rape a hotel maid or a 13-year-old girl. He didn’t knock up a staffer while his wife was terminally ill with cancer, then misappropriate campaign funds to cover it up. He didn’t serve his sick wife divorce papers while cavorting with yet another staffer. He didn’t leave the maimed woman who cared for him after his release from a Vietnamese POW camp for a 25-year-old brewing heiress. He didn’t (with all respect) get his peepee sucked in the Oval Office by an intern. He didn’t rail against the evils of homosexuality while soliciting the services of a male meth-head prostitute (if you don’t remember exactly which one that was, it’s because there are too many to name). And he didn’t coerce his humiliated wife to stand next to him during a debasing press conference, which, as far as I’m concerned, almost makes him a feminist fucking hero.

Everyone knew the pregnancy wasn’t viable, that it couldn’t be viable given the amount of blood I was losing, but it still took hours for anyone at the hospital to do anything. The doctor on call didn’t do abortions. At all. Ever. In fact, no one on call that night did. Meanwhile, an ignorant batch of medical students had gathered to study me - one actually showed me the ultrasound of our dying child while asking me if it was a planned pregnancy. Several wanted to examine me while I lay there bleeding and in pain. No one gave me anything for the pain or even respected my request to close the door even though I was on the labor and delivery floor listening to other women have healthy babies as the baby I had been trying to save died in my womb.

I found out that the doctor had taken my husband aside as they brought me into surgery. She promised him she would do her best to save me, but she warned him there was a distinct possibility that she would fail. The doctor who didn’t do abortions was supposed to have contacted her (or someone else who would perform the procedure) immediately. He didn’t. Neither did his students… when a bleeding woman was brought to him for treatment he refused to do the only thing that could stop the bleeding. Because he didn’t do abortions. Ever.

My two kids at home almost lost their mother because someone decided that my life was worth less than that of a fetus that was going to die anyway. My husband had told them exactly what my regular doctor said, and the ER doctor had already warned us what would have to happen. Yet none of this mattered when confronted by the idea that no one needs an abortion. You shouldn’t need to know the details of why a woman aborts to trust her to make the best decision for herself. I don’t regret my abortion, but I would also never use my situation to suggest that the only time another woman should have the procedure is when her life is at stake. After my family found out I’d had an abortion, I got a phone call from a cousin who felt the need to tell me I was wrong to have interfered with God’s plan. And in that moment I understood exactly what kind of people judge a woman’s reproductive choices.

This is horrifying. When Republican congresswomen claim the GOP is not anti-woman, they’re lying through their teeth. As for healthcare professionals - First, do no harm.

GOP Attacks Women : Weiner Responds

“You think 435 fairly well-to-do mostly white men should make that decision?”
“I think the elected representative - “
“Should make - for that woman, and that child.”
“May I finish my answer?”
“Well, it doesn’t sound terribly enticing, no.”

OHMYGOD NEW HERO RIGHT HERE.

i LOVE this man.

I really might cry. I want to hug him.

Tumblr and Weiner need to get together for a hug-a-thon.

 Team Weiner forever and ever.

THE GENTLEMAN LOVES WOMEN

This whole thing! Weiner is hero status.
